In 2018 and 2019 I did a series of projects for a wonderful family in Davis, CA. We started with several gravel bag landscape walls designed to create seating and separation and to remind Satinder of his Punjabi childhood. When those were complete, we began construction of “The Earth Chapel.” This was a small cob outbuilding with an urbanite foundation and living roof. Cob walls and earthen floors were built mainly by volunteers during work parties. The interior plaster is a lime and straw finish modeled on the Japanese tosa shikkui, with accents of pigmented clay.
